The flexibility and freedom of freelancing can be extremely attractive to design professionals who would rather not be tied down to a corporate office or a specific employer. However, freelance work comes with its own unique challenges and stresses. It’s important to establish a solid network and client base, market your skills and handle the administrative tasks (budgeting, invoicing, making estimated tax payments) that come with being self-employed.
Getting your first clients as a new freelancer can be tough and requires an extra level of creativity. Many new designers start by searching for projects on major freelance marketplaces, but it’s also worth reaching out directly to companies and individuals who might need some fresh creative thinking. This is an excellent opportunity to test out your networking skills, develop a relationship with the person you’re pitching and see what happens!
A big part of the challenge of being a freelance designer is finding enough steady clients to keep your income up. Getting your name out there is key, so consider blogging, participating in social media groups or networking at industry events. Some new freelancers are even taking matters into their own hands by establishing their own design agencies to take on the work they want.
It’s also helpful to focus on one type of design project or client at a time so that you’re not jumping from client to client. You can also increase demand for your services by offering products like books or design kits, creating and selling e-courses or getting press in your niche markets.
While you’re working with a client on a specific project, it’s important to clearly define what the deliverables are, how much each will take and any deadlines or milestones you’d like to meet. Outlining a project scope before the design process begins will help you and your freelancer stay on the same page about expectations.
As a freelancer, you may need to increase your rates at some point. Be sure to do this gradually so that you don’t scare off existing or ongoing clients. It’s also a good idea to set your hourly rate higher than you think you need to in order to account for fluctuations in the marketplace or your own experience level.
Being a freelance designer can be a great career option for those who want the benefits of entrepreneurship with the flexibility to choose their own hours and clients. While establishing a stable stream of work can be challenging, many freelancers report that they’re happy with their income and are looking forward to an exciting future in their field.
